Matrei in Osttirol

Only a few kilometres from Lienz, there is the holiday village Matrei in Osttirol, a small city located in central position regarding the vacation valleys in the surroundings. The two highest mountains of Austria, the Grossglockner (3,798 m) and the Grossvenediger (3,674 m) as well as the Hohe Tauern National Park are located right on the doorstep and offer perfect conditions for varied leisure time activities in great scenery.

High alpine walking tours from one refuge to another, trips to the “Zedlacher paradise”, a wonderful old larch forest, or a tour to one of the 150 surrounding mountains are very popular with hikers. The panoramic view, combined with clear mountain air and colours have a positive impact on body and soul. In case you would like to enjoy the panoramic view on Matrei and surroundings, we warmly recommend you to make a walk to Weissenstein Castle, which since 1865 has been in private hands and that is why it can only be visited from outside. The skiing area Matreier Goldried is one of the skiing areas in the Alps where the snow is hardly ever missing. Moreover the valley station is directly located in the centre of the village. And if the 55 km of ski slopes are not enough for you, Matrei is also connected to the Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei ski region (110 km of ski slopes) and the skiing area “Top-Ski East Tyrol” (350 km of ski slopes).

Our recommendation: need a real rush of adrenaline? Rafting on the Isel river, the last intact glacial stream of the Alps! And in the evening just sit back and enjoy the camp fire and music. A really unforgettable holiday experience, if you have the guts! ;-)
