Hopfgarten and its hamlets Dölach, Lerch, Plon, Hof and Rajach represent the entrance of the wild romantic Defereggental valley. The valley has already been settled in the 7th century, above all due to the ore deposit in the surroundings. In 1569 AD the village has been pest-ridden and in the following years mining industry did not boom any longer. That is why timber industry became an important branche in this area…
Thanks to the mild climate and the central location in the Defereggental valley, Hopfgarten is really popular with those who would like to spend active holidays as well as those who simply would like to relax. Make a bycicle ride and explore the landscape on the bycicle path Hopfgarten-Mellitzwald. Slightly more exhausting is the mountain bike trail Zwenewald, featuring a leght of 7.6 km and a difference in altitude of 693 metres. Also on the ski slopes fun and action are guaranteed. The Mühlegg T-bar lift, which takes you on 1,250 m asl, is highly popular with children and beginners.
Also from a cultural point of view the village comes up with different sights, for example the parish church which dates back to 1756 and features a ceiling fresco of Chr. Brandstätter as well as a high altar of Franz Stauder. The monument for Josef Plattner, a freedom fighter, is located opposite the elementary school. And if you would like to make a walk across the centre of the village or in the surroundings, you also come by the Böckin mill. On a weekly basis, in this cornmill there are performances that give you an insight into the work of the farmers of ancient times.
Our recommendation: you love hiking? So the theme path “Im Reich des Apollo” (In the reign of Apollo) is a real must-do in your vacation. Along 4 km this hike takes you across the sunny Defereggental valley and provides a rare insight into the hard life of mountain farmers.
