Obertilliach 2009

Obertilliach

This holiday village is characterised by a centre that is protected as a historic monument.

Altitude: 1,450 m asl

Slightly above the neighbouring Untertilliach, there is the village Obertilliach (see pic), located in the Lienz Dolomites and the Carnic Alps. Obertilliach is considered to be the most beautiful and remarkable village of the entire alpine area and in 1978 it was declared to be protected as a historic monument. The museum of local history, which is located in the former granary in the centre, provides an insight into the local farmers’ history.

The 155 km long “Karnischer Höhenweg” (Carnic high path) in the homonymous Alps snakes its way very close to the village. As hiking path that offers a splendid view, it takes you along the Austrian-Italian border, past nine refuges. Another possibility is to take the double-seated chair lift, which brings you into the hiking area Golzentipp. This is where in high summer the alpine meadows are in full blossom, and among the flowerage, there is also the gentian. And: Obertilliach is an insider’s tip for paragliders. Shush, don’t retell! ;-)

In winter, Obertilliach is connected to the so-called “Grenzlandloipe”, a cross-country ski track, and since recently also to the newest biathlon stadium. A very famous inhabitant is the cross-country skier Ole Einar Bjørndalen. However, if you prefer normal skiers, there is the skiing area Golzentipp which features 16 km of well-groomed ski slopes. The offer also includes a ski school, ski rental, snowboard rental as well as a toboggan run, an ice rink and an ice stock rink.

Our tip: In summer you can benefit from the “East Tyrol-Card”. It is available in the tourist office and offers reductions in museums, sports facilities etc.
