Innervillgraten

On the area of Innervillgraten rises also the famous Oberstaller Alpine Pasture, a listed mountain village

Altitude: 1,402 m a.s.l.

Far away from the rush of everyday life, Innervillgraten reaches up to the hamlet of Kalkstein at 1,640 m a.s.l., surrounded by numerous other mountain farms. Kalkstein is at the same time a pilgrimage site and has already been transformed into a film set. Despite of its position, the village was mentioned for the first time in 788 AD as "Alpe Valgrata". In 1643 AD, Black Death rampaged throughout this area and took 31 human lives - a lot for a little village like Innervillgraten...

Three hiking trails take you cross-border into the Italian Val Casies valley in South Tyrol: The ancient paths were used by inhabitants for trading. However, if you prefer bikes, we recommend the 23 km long Berg-Radl-Weg Innervillgraten, a MTB trail leading you up to the Berglet Farms at 1,700 m a.s.l. Also motorised two-wheelers can be seen in the Villgratental valley, due to the fact that the Dolomites, the Lesachtal valley, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, and the East Tyrolean and South Tyrolean valleys invite to numerous beautiful motorcycle tours.

If you are interested in culture and history, the Wegelate Sawmill, the one and only Venetian sawmill in the surroundings, tells you about the past. For this reason, the association that deals with the preservation of tradition, was awarded with the honouring "Europa Nostra Award" and the "Henry Ford Environment Award". Also the Oberstaller Alpine Pasture is well worth a visit, a listed mountain village from the 17th century with 18 huts and a chapel.
