Gries am Brenner Winter 2011

Gries am Brenner

Gries am Brenner is located at the border to South Tyrol (Italy).

Altitude: 1,165 m asl

Single farms, hamlets and component localities such as Nösslach, Vinaders at the entrance of the Obernberger valley, as well as the former toll station Lueg and Brennersee at Passo del Brennero, form the municipality of Gries am Brenner. Gries is part of the North Tyrolean part of the Wipptal valley proceeding in the upper part of South Tyrol. Already in the Roman era Gries was an important station on the way to the south. In the course of time several personalities such as Karl der Grosse, Albrecht Dürer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart stopped in this place. A cave castle was meant to protect this course…

The surroundings of Gries are perfect for hiking, as there are numerous attracting destinations such as lakes, waterfalls and viewpoints. Choose from a wide variety of hiking offers including easy hikes, e.g. to the Sattelberg alpine pasture, Nösslachhütte refuge or along the “Mining Trail” (Bergwerksweg), as well as more challenging tours, e. g. on the Spina del Lupo (Wolfendorn) mountain or the summit of the Sattelberg mountain. Moreover you have the possibility to make a horse riding tour, as the Kracherhof farm offers not only tours on the horseback, but also horse-drawn carriage rides. The outdoor pool of Steinach as well as Lake Obernberg at Obernberg am Brenner complete the varied offer you can enjoy in this village in summertime.

However, also winter is able to satisfy every needs: in the surroundings there is the Bergeralm ski & fun arena as well as the Navis, Trins, Vals, Gschnitz and Schmirn lift facilities. Moreover there are toboggan runs at the Sattelberg and Nösslachhütte refuges. In the last years ski touring has become more and more popular in this area and the Sattelberg mountain is one of the most popular tour destinations in winter. By the way: Tobias Moretti, a famous Austrian actor, as well as the Austrian alpine skiing champion Günther Mader were born in Gries!

Our recommendation: there are four churches in the municipal area that are worth to be visited: the St. Leonhard church at Vinaders, the St. Jakob church at Nösslach, the Maria Heimsuchung church at Gries and the church dedicated to St. Christoph and Sigmund at Lueg.
