Close to the border of Vorarlberg, at the head of the Paznauntal valley, there is the holiday resort of Galtür. The name of the village derives from the word “cultura”, which is a term that reminds on people in Engadine. Once upon a time this village has been a pilgrimage site and it started booming when the first mountaineers came to explore this valley. Due to its altitude, it is above all recommendable to people who suffer from allergies and asthma. Since 1997 Galtür, however, is the first official climatic spa of Tyrol.
It really seems to be a fairytale-like scenery when you look at the Silvretta mountain chain that arises in the background of Galtür. The 74 mountains and glaciers of 3,000 metres are with good reason at the centre of attention in the summer season. Only recently the fixed rope route Silvapark has been established at an altitude between 2,300 and 2,700 m asl and is considered to be of medium to difficult level. Moreover there are some 250 km hiking, walking and nordic-walking trails. For those who love motorised vehicles, there is a special highlight, which is the Silvretta high alpine road that leads from the Paznauntal valley to Vorarlberg.
In winter months, 12 lift facilities and 40 km of well groomed ski slopes provide ski fun on 2,300 m asl in the Silvapark skiing area. Moreover the Silvretta mountain chain is also a perfect place for snowshoeing and ski touring. Everyone is invited to enjoy the great panoramic view! However, avalanche protection is a huge priority in Galtür, as the village has been cut off from the outside world for several days due to the descent of an avalanche in 1999. As a consequence, the Alpinarium Galtür has been established, which reminds on this dreadful event and at the same time saves as leisure time facility, featuring an indoor and outdoor climbing wall, a café, a sun terrace and seminar rooms…
