Vomp
For its richness in water, Vomp is also famous as spring and fountain village.
Altitude: 566 m asl
Inhabited by some 4,500 people, Vomp extends from the Inn riverside and the Karwendel mountain chain to the border of Bavaria. The municipal area includes the villages Dorf, Vomp-Talboden, Fiecht, Vomperberg, Altmahd/Pirchat, Innerhöfe and Hinteriss. A popular destination is of course the Karwendel Alpine Park, a famous nature reserve in the homonymous mountain chain.
The information centre of the Alpine Park at Hinterriss provides information about the incomparable natural landscape by means of modern techniques. After a visit to the information centre, head out for cycling, climbing and mountaineering in this fascinating area. Only a few km from the centre, there is the so-called “Eng” at 1,200 m asl, characterised by a vast area covered by maples. This area is a popular hiking destination, as there are also alpine pastures and a dairy that can be visited, accessible via a toll road. In winter you can also enjoy skiing and cross-country skiing, in the village itself there is a fitness parcours with 12 stations.
Vomp has also got some sights to offer, e.g several chapels: the Hofer chapel dating back to 1819 is dedicated to the Fourteen Auxiliary Saints and decorated with an altarpiece of Johann Georg Höttinger from 1730. The Kreuzbichl chapel, however, dates back to the year 1705 and was a pilgrimage site for a long period of time. Famous are also the Lourdes chapel of 1900 and the Veit’n chapel, also known as Maria Schnee chapel, of the 18th century, decorated with statues of St. Erasmus, Stephanus, Laurentius and Ulrich. Two further buildings complete our village tour: on the one hand the Fiecht monastery at which also the Way of St. James goes part, on the other hand Sigmundslust Castle, the former hunting château of Archduke Sigismund der Münzreiche…
Our recommendation: what is particularly interesting in autumn is the area of the so-called “Eng”, enchanting its visitors with a wide varied of golden colours. Don’t miss this astonishingly beautiful area!
