Mieminger mountain chain

The Mieminger mountain chain is overshadowed by the much more popular Wetterstein mountain chain.

The Mieminger mounain chain is a mountain range in the Northern Limestone Alps in the East Alps and extends in the province of Tyrol. While the central part is rather calm, the areas round Coburg refuge and Lake Drachensee (see pic) in the west as well as the Hohe Munde in the east are much more lively and popular with hikers. By the way the Hohe Munde peak is a popular, but also challenging destination for those who love ski mountaineering.

The Mieminger chain of mountains is bounded by the Oberinntal valley in the south, the Fernpass in the west, the Gaistal valley in the north and the Seefelder Sattel in the east. Also from a geological point of view, the Mieminger mounain chain is an interesting area, as this chain is characterised by sandstones, argellite, hornstone as well as volcanic tuff and dates back to the geologic era of Triassic and Jurassic.

Peaks: Some of the most famous mountains of the Mieminger mountain chain are the Hohe Munde (2,662 m), Griesspitzen (2,747 m), Wanning (2,493 m), Hochplattig (2,768 m), Grünstein (2,666 m), the Vorderer and Hinterer Tajakopf (2,452 m, 2,409 m), the Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze peak (2,417 m), the Tschirgant (2,370 m) and the Simmering (2,096 m).

Hiking: The lakes partaining to this area are lake Drachensee and Seebensee, famous destinations for hikers. In the surroundings of the Marienbergjoch ridge there is a skiing area.
