In 1888 the Tyrolean Trades Association decided to establish a Tyrolean Trade Museum in Innsbruck. In the course of time the collection has been expanded and passed on to the Tyrolean Chamber of Trade and Industry and later on to the Regional Authority. Finally in 1929 the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum has been inaugurated. The exhibits have been collected within the old borders of Tyrol, including today’s Province of Trento and the Ladin valleys of the Dolomites.
The focus has been set on arts and crafts and the applied arts, home industries, masks and traditional dresses of Tyrol. Moreover the exhibits derive from different social strata. Furthermore there are reproductions of farmhouses as well as Medieval parlours. The offer is completed by special exhibitions, e.g. a Tyrolean crib exhibition in Christmas time. What is particularly interesting for families is a special family tour and the workshop for kids. Also children’s birthday parties are organised in the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum.
Since the comprehensive building refurbishments in 2008/09, the museum shines in new splendour. The new companion in the museum is “Luzifer”, who tries to get to the bottom of things. What is reality? What only seems to be? Accompany Luzifer on a time journey!
