Wängle

Wängle is located at the foot of the skiing and hiking area Reuttener Hahnenkamm as well as the mountains of the Tannheimer valley.

Altitude: 882 m asl

The four component localities of Hinterbichl, Holz, Niederwängle and Winkl form the municipality of Wängle, one of the oldest settlements of the Ausserfern region. This village located in the west of Reutte has been mentioned for the first time in 1278 AD. The municipal emblem illustrates the patron saint of the village, St. Martin, in armour and with a wide coat, sitting on a white horse.

Several Nordic Walking trails and panoramic promenades snake in and around the valley basin. As Wängle is located at the foot of the Hahnenkamm mountain, it takes you only a few minutes to reach this popular hiking area with its meadows and mountain refuges. Particularly popular is the Gehrenalpe refuge, offering an alpine hut with huge sun terrace, the Schneetalalm pasture, which is considered to be “the musical alpine pasture of the Tannheimer valley”, as well as the cosy Cilly mountain hut, to mention only some. Also recommendable is the circular trail Wängle-Lechaschau-Höflein or the high-altitude trail Hinterbichl-Unterletzen Winter. Beside cycling or hiking, Wängle also offers other sports offers: there is an asphalt and ice stock track, badminton, squash and table tennis facilities, a tennis court, a miniature golf course, a beach volley and football field and the possibility to climb, do archery and horse riding.

But that’s far from being all, several lakes in the surroundings provide refreshment in summertime. One of these is Lake Plansee, the second largest lake of Tyrol, second only to Lake Achensee, and Lake Urisee at Reutte, which is a popular destination for those who love diving. Lake Frauensee, however, extends on a surface of 1 hectare, only a few km from Wängle. The Hahnenkamm mountain, at the foot of which Wängle is located, in winter transforms into a skiing area with 16 km of ski slopes and five lift facilities. In 2007 this resort was venue for the ski speed World Championships. By the way: Harti Weirather, the World Champion of downhill skiing of 1982, was born in Wängle!

Our recommendation: five sacred buildings in the municipality make your heart leap for joy if you love culture. There are four chapels - the Dreifaltigkeitskapelle chapel, the Herz Maria chapel, the Herz Jesu chapel and the Hinterbichl chapel - as well as the St. Martin parish church. The ceiling frescoes of Franz Anton Zeiller inter alia show the collection of manna in the forest, while the altar wings of Paul Zeiller show St. Martin and the Holy family.
