The trail through the Wolfsklamm leads from Stans to the former hermitage and present pilgrimage site St. Georgenberg
The trail alone, which leads from Stans up to the pilgrimage church and the tavern of St. Georgenberg, will impress you: The hike starts at the parking space in the village centre and takes you in 20 minutes to the entrance of the Wolf Gorge (Wolfsklamm).
Unusually, the gorge was not named after the Rio di Stans, taking its course across the canyon, but after the wolves that, according to legends, used to live in this place. Already in 1901, wooden footpaths were established and inaugurated, which were, however, destroyed in a flooding in 1950. The hermitage high above has already been known in 950 AD.
Today, 354 steps lead you the way to St. Georgenberg, the oldest pilgrimage site of Tyrol. The 2-hour hike overcomes stairs and steps, passages and narrow paths, until you reach the St. Georgenberg Monastery in the Karwendel Alpine Park. The little fee you have to pay at the entrance is applied for the protection of the stunning gorge and its trails.
