Daba Gorge and Dorfer Valley

The Daba Gorge and the Dorfer Valley are located near Kals am Grossglockner in the High Tauern National Park

The Daba Gorge and the Dorfer Valley can be reached from Burg, a district of Kals am Grossglockner. For a long time, the Dorfer Valley was comprised in the project of a huge artificial lake, which would have inundated the entire valley. When the project failed, two charming excursion destinations remained: the valley and the wild romantic Daba Gorge at its entrance.

The narrow Daba Gorge (Dabaklamm) affascinates with the rushing water and the panoramic pulpit which consists of steel grid stairs that give you the impression to hover over the deep. The trail that takes you across the gorge is easily walkable, but often slippery due to the wet ground.

The National Park Educational Trail with the so called "listening trees" takes you then into the Dorfer Valley (Dorfer Tal). Information panels make you familiar with the history of this "Valley of Alpine Pastures" with its Swiss pine forests and alpine meadows. Interesting destinations are the Berger Mountain Hut (1 hour, 1,637 m a.s.l.), the Kalser Tauernhaus (1.5 hours, 1,754 m a.s.l.) and the Taurer-Rudolfshütte (4-5 hours, 2,315 m a.s.l.), and Lake Dorfer, a natural jewel at 1,935 m a.s.l.
