Dabaklamm Gorge / Dorfer Valley

The Dabaklamm Gorge and the Dorfer Valley are located in the surroundings of Kals am Grossglockner.

The Dabaklamm Gorge and the Dorfer Valley can be reached from Burg, a district of Kals am Grossglockner. For a long time the Dorfer Valley was comprised in the project of a huge artificial lake, which would have inundated the entire valley. When the project failed, two charming excursion destinations remained: the Dorfer Valley which is famous for the mountain huts and agriculture, as well as the wild romantic Dabaklamm Gorge at the valley entrance.

The highlight of the narrow Dabaklamm Gorge is not only the rushing water, a real natural power, but also the panoramic pulpit in the gorge, as well as the National Park Educational Trail with the so called “listening trees”, stretching to the Dorfer Valley (Dorfer Tal, in German). The panoramic pulpit consists of steel grid stairs, which give you the impression to hover over the deep. The trail that takes you across the gorge is easily walkable, but often slippery due to the wet ground.

A popular hike, including both the gorge as well as the valley, starts at the “Dorfer Tal” parking space and takes across the Dabaklamm Gorge. Afterwards the trail leads you the way to the “Valley of Alpine Pastures”, how it is also referred to. Information panels make you familiar with the history of this charming place with its alpine pastures, Swiss pine forests and alpine meadows. Interesting destinations in the surroundings are the Bergeralm mountain hut (1 hour, 1,637 m a.s.l.), the Kalser Tauernhaus hut (1.5 hours, 1,754 m a.s.l.) and the Taurer-Rudolfshütte hut (4-5 hours, 2,315 m a.s.l.) as well as Lake Dorfer, a natural jewel at 1,935 m a.s.l.
