Lake Zireiner, “the Jewel of the Rofan” is considered to be the most beautiful mountain lake in Tyrol.
Definitely a storybook lake is Lake Zireiner in the Rofan mountains. Located at 1,799 m asl the 400 m long lake is immersed into beautiful alpine pastures between the Rofanspitze and Rosskogel peaks. "The blue Eye of the Rofan" and "the Jewel of the Rofan" is not only considered to be the most beautiful lake in the Rofan mountains, but also the most often photographed mountain lake of Tyrol. Depending on the weather the lake changes its colour nuances and around midday the Rofanspitze mountain is reflected in the lake.
A visit to Lake Zireiner can perfectly be combined with a pleasant hike in the Rofan mountains. From the west end of the lake a path takes you for instance on the Rofanspitze peak (2,259 m asl) or the Sagzahn (2,228 m asl). Otherwise you can also walk to the Bayreuther refuge via the Zireiner alpine pasture. The long distance walking trail E4 starting in Spain and leading to Cyprus, also takes past this lake: along the stage Steinberg am Rofan - Maurach you can admire Lake Zireiner. In summer, after an exhausting hike, you might however enjoy a refreshing foot bath in the cool lake.
Moreover Lake Zireiner is a popular destination for families as it is easily reachable from the mountain station of the Sonnwendjochbahn funicular in 30-45 minutes. For children this area is a great high alpine playground. While their kids play round the lake, parents can enjoy the great outdoors. Unfortunately this lake is too cold for swimming, but in the crystal clear waters of this lake, many little fish, called "Pfrillen", are at home. And according to legends, the waters of this lake drag you under if you fall asleep at the lakeside, so please be careful!
