Located at the end of the Tuxertal valley, a tributary valley of the Zillertal valley, Tux is surrounded by high mountains like the Olperer Glacier (3,476 m asl), the Tuxer Joch (2,388 m asl), the Gefrorene Wand (3,288 m asl) and the Hoher Riffler mountains (3,321 m asl). The panoramic view is magnificient! The farms are scattered on the hills, and on the farm Gemais, located on 1,450 m asl, there has even been put a preservation order. And the silver head of the ram that is illustrated on the emblem of the village refers to Tux as home of the Tyrolean stone sheep!
The municipality that includes a total of 100 sqkm offers 350 km of hiking paths, 150 km of nordic-walking trails and 70 km of MTB trails. Popular excursion destinations in summer months are the Schleier waterfall, the Tux waterfall or the Spannagel cave, a 10 km long show cave. This is where everyone becomes a discoverer! Moreover in the cheese dairy “Stoankasern” you can watch how milk is manufactured into butter and cheese and also taste the products. Another highlight you don’t have to miss is the highest located thermal bath throughout Europe. Pure relaxation in an unforgettable surrounding!
In winter on the Hintertux Glacier, the only all-year-round skiing area of Austria, you can enjoy skiing on 86 km, in summer anyhow on 18 km of slopes. The 3,250 m high peak can be reached via 21 lift facilites. When you reach the summit, you first have to admire the great panoramic view, then you can go skiing! :-) Also numerous national ski teams practice on this glacier, and in case you would like to participate, there are professional ski camps for adults and children, participants and almost professionals.
Our recommendation: this time we have a special family tip! On 3,250 m asl there is the “Gletscherflohpark”, the highest located children’s playground throughout Europe. There are not only parties for children, but also taster courses and in the “Kraxel-Maxel-Camp” children learn correct behaviour in the mountains.
