Stumm

The holiday resort Stumm is located at 556 m asl opposite the village Kaltenbach.

Altitude: 556 m asl

The municipality of Stumm is made up of the component localities Stumm, Ahrnbach, Acham and März and is located opposite Kaltenbach in the middle of the Zillertal valley. In the 8th century the Archduke Tassilo III of Bavaria donated goods in this area to the cathedral chapter Herrenchiemsee, from which the “Hofmark Stumm” developed in the course of time. It repeatedly changed hands in the subsequent period of time.

Today Stumm is the second smallest locality of the Zillertal valley and represents a pleasant holiday resort. Interesting buildings are the late Gothic parish church dedicated to St. Rupert, which was enlarged in 1722 and converted to Baroque style in the interior. Some of the most striking pieces of art are the ceiling fresco by Christof Anton Mayr and the relief by Nissl dated 1756. Even in the municipal emblem Saint Rupert is illustrated with crosier and salt shaker. However, Stumm Castle, surrounded by a lushly planted park, is located in the heart of the village. This mansion was established in 1551 in the style of Tyrolean noble mansions and can only be visited from the outside.

In summer the leisure time facility Stumm offers a swimming pond and outdoor pool providing refreshment on hot summer days. Various slides, a children’s pool and a beach volley field make this facility a popular meeting point both for adults and kids. Moreover every two years in high summer there is the famous international culture festival “Stummer Schrei”. International theatre, music and dance productions at the highest stage are also presented in Aschau, Fügen, Kaltenbach and Ried. Open-air-theatres usually take place in the centre of Stumm. However, also winter is not at all boring at Stumm, as all skiing areas of the Zillertal valley are within easy reach, also the famous Zillertal Arena with its 166 km of slopes or the Ski-optimal Hochfügen Hochzillertal ski region offering a variety of 181 km of ski slopes. This skiing resort is accessible via the Hochzillertalbahn funicular from Kaltenbach. And after a satisfying day on the slopes we recommend you to relax in one of the restaurants and try some Tyrolean delicacies!

Our recommendation: go for a walk across the village… the village square of Stumm is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares of Tyrol. With its church, castle and village fountain it is often venue for theatre performances!
