Strass im Zillertal
Strass extends at the foot of the 628 m high Brettfall, a pinnacle of the Larchkopf mountain (1,367 m asl).
Altitude: 522 m asl
At the entrance of the Zillertal valley, where the Ziller river joins the Inn river, there is the holiday resort of Strass. Great parts of the municipal area extend to the Inntal valley, the other parts in the Zillertal valley. In 1112 AD first mentioned as “Stranze”, later on it became famous as border town and custom facilities, when the Zillertal valley used to be part of Salzburg and from 1504 of the Bavarian Unterinntal valley. The German small town of Eben in Lower Fraconia has become the partner municipality of Strass…
Strass and Rotholz are two stations of the nostalgic Zillertal Railway, running in the Zillertal valley from Jenbach to Mayrhofen. One of the most striking buildings of Strass is Thurneck Castle, which has been constructed in 1576 by Archduke Ferdinand II as hunting castle and maison de plaisance. Today it hosts the agricultural school and research institute. In addition to this remarkable building, there are three sacred buildings in the village that are worth to be vistied: the Riftkapelle chapel is dedicated to Saint Mary and was constructed in 1743 by Jakob Singer, while the pilgrimage church Maria Brettfall offers a great view on the Zillertal valley. This chapel is characterised by decorative paintings and and sculptures and can be reached in a 45-minutes’ walk from the village. The parish church, however, has been mentioned for the first time in the 14th century and is dedicated to St. James, who is also depicted on the emblem of the village with mussels and pilgrims’s staff.
The Zillertal Alps with the homonymous nature park are perfect terrain for cycling and hiking as well as climbing tours, offering great panoramic views. And other tourist centres such as Innsbruck, Kufstein and Lake Achensee are not far away. In winter the municipality of Strass is actually surrounded by skiing areas: the ski centres of the regions Zillertal, Achensee and Alpbachtal are all located within easy reach and there are free shuttle services taking you to skiing areas Spieljoch and Hochfügen Hochzillertal. In the village there is a ski lift which is perfect for those who would like the first passes on the snow.
Our recommendation: particularly popular are motorbike tours across the great landscape, e.g. along the Zillertaler Höhenstrasse, taking you from 550 m to 2,020 m asl on the 48 km long panorama road!
