Wildermieming

Wildermieming has become famous due to a German tv series.

Wildermieming-Dorf, Wildermieming-Siedlung and Affenhausen form the municipality of Wildermieming, located in the eastern Mieminger plateau. The name of Affenhausen derives from Saint Afra, who is the patron saint of carters. In the 19th century Wildermieming has been separated from Mieming. The golden mountain pine branch illustrated on the emblem of the village pays tribute to the mountain pine as protection against debris flows.

A tv series called “Der Bergdoktor” (The Mountain Doctor) made this village popular, not as Wildermieming, but as fictional village “Sonnenstein”. Still today the setting (see pic), located only a 5-minutes’ walk from the village, is a popular excursion destination. Klamm Castle, located at Mieming, used to be called “Sonnenstein Castle” in this tv series. If you would like to connect your visit of the setting with a walk we recommend you to start at Obermieming. This is where you first have to visit the St. Georg chapel, before a two-hours’ walk takes you there. There is also an apposite “Bergdoktor cycle trail” taking cyclists from Telfs to Wildermieming and into the beautiful Gurgltal valley.

About 20 km of hiking trails take you into the world of mountains of the beautiful alpine park Mieminger plateau, which is an evironment protection project. Along 5 theme trails you can experience the flora and fauna: The “Mooswiesenweg” (moss meadow trail) makes you familiar with low moors and wet meadows with its insects and orchids, the “Weg der Extreme” (trail of the extremes) takes you to the Locherboden area and shows the impact of dry and hot climate at the southern limestone slopes of the Fiechter Köpfl mountain. The “Agnertalweg” snakes across forests in the surroundings of Wildermieming and Gerhardhof and the “Fernpass trail” takes hikers round beautiful Lake Fernsteinsee and up into the Afrigall area. The fifth trail, the “Wintertrail Grünberg”, focuses on extreme conditions in the mountains in wintertime. In this season you can also choose from ice skating, tobogganing as well as 20 km of cross-country ski trails and 25 km of winter hiking trails.

Our tip: At the Locherboden area there is the pilgrimage church Maria Hilf, that is really worth to be visited! This chapel is considered to be equally popular as the famous “Wedding Chapels” in Las Vegas…
