Roppen Winter 2011

Roppen

The popular holiday resort of Roppen is located only 5 km from Imst.

Altitude: 724 m asl

The municipality of Roppen is located between the junction of the Pitztal and Oetztal valleys. In 1260 “Roupen” has been mentioned for the first time, but this area is considered to have been settled already 3,000 years ago. The component villages are connected by a wooden bridge, a former toll bridge, above the Inn river. The emblem of the municipality shows white edges on blue background, broken through by a vertical line. The edges represent the name of the village, as “rupes” is a Latin term that means “at the rocks”. The gorges between the pinnacles are meant to symbolize the Innschlucht gorge.

Thanks to its position close to where the Pitze and the Oetztaler Ache rivers empty into the Inn river, the village is a perfect spot for those who love water sports such as canyoning, kajaking or rafting. Only a stone’s throw from Roppen, at Oetztal-Bahnhof, there is the so-called “AREA47″, which is not only a rafting and kayaking basis with several special attractions such as a high-rope course, but it also includes a popular lake for bathing. The water area comprises 20,000 sqm and does not only offer a lake where you can swim and refresh, but also a water-slide park, water trampolines, a fitness studio in Venice beach style as well as a beach volley, beach soccer and basket field. In winter, however, the village offers an ice skating ground. And as the Pitztal and Oetztal valleys are only located a stone’s throw away, also skiers and snowboarders can look forward to their holidays in this area…

Popular sights in Roppen are its enchanting chapels which are perfectly embedded into the great landscape. The Burschlkapelle chapel was built in the 1960s and is located on a hill above the village, from where you can enjoy a perfect view on Roppen. Equally interesting is a visit of the St. Leonhard parish church boasting a neo-Gothic altar and beautiful frescoes, as well as the St. Antonius chapel. The latter can be found in the component locality of Oetzbruck next to a huge chestnut tree. However, the earth pillars in the Waldertal valley, interesting sand and stone monuments, can be visited when hiking on the circular trail between Roppen and Arzl im Pitztal. An equally popular destination is the Maisalm pasture: the hiking trail starts at the post office of Mairhof and takes you to the alpine pasture via the Forchheimerweg trail. This is where you can enjoy a fabulous view on the Inntal valley and the Mieminger plateau. After one of these trips in the great outdoors your muscles might need to relax, so what about a revitalizing Kneipp bath? The water in the so-called “Römerbadl” has got a temperature of about 12 - 13 degrees C the whole year round!

Our recommendation: also the municipality of Roppen is located along the Way of St. James. Hike along this trail and feel like pilgrims in former times!
