Mils bei Imst

The little holiday resort of Mils is located close to Imst at 743 m asl.

The municipality of Mils bei Imst with its 550 inhabitants extends in the north of the Inn river. The name Mils derives from the Latin term “molere” (mill), as the village is located on a debris cone, on which mills were located. Mils, which is particularly popular with those who seek relaxation, was able to preserve its rural appearance. The three horseshoes on the emblem of the municipality remind on the fact that in former times the farmers enabled vehicles to overcome steep road sections by harnessing their ox. The colours blue and red, however, symbolize the former location of Mils at the border between the courts of Landeck and Imst.

Popular destinations in the surroundings of Mils are above all the Milser Au meadow as well as the Larsennschlucht gorge. The Milser Au meadow, including 36.8 hectares, is a real natural jewel, located along the Inn river. An ideal area for recreation, both for adults and kids! It is the last large lowland riparian forest in the upper Inntal valley and for this reason protected since 1987. In 2003 a storm brought about damage, resulting in several protecting measures and a revitalisation programme for the meadow that was launched in 2008. The Larsennschlucht gorge, however, is a popular meeting point for climbers, coming here to climb and conquer the gorge. The Larsennbach river rises in the surroundings of Schönwies, runs through the gorge and comes out between Milserberg and Lasaltnerwand.

Also if you would like to spend active holidays, Mils is the right place for you, as the possibilities regarding leisure time activities are varied. There is e.g. the leisure time facility Hitte-Hatte-Au, which is based on ecology principles. This facility is part of the recreation area “Trofana Tyrol”, which is considered to be one of the best resting areas of Austria and even Europe! For adults there is a herb garden, a trout pond, water games and a kneipp facility, while children love the see-saws and the petting zoo. Moreover Mils is not only located along the famous Way of St. James, but also along the long-distance cycling trails of the Inn river and the Via Claudia Augusta. Those who aim higher can choose from one of the hiking trails taking you across the fabulous mountain landscape in the surroundings of Mils, such as the Gunglgrünsteig trail, along which you can hike from Mils to Imst via the Sonnberg mountain. In winter, however, Mils offers an ice skating ground and a cross-country ski run, making you experience the snow-covered landscape.

Our recommendation: the parish church that was constructed to honour St. Sebastian, a saint that protects from the pest, is well worth a visit! It enthrones a rock spur at Mils and was mentioned for the first time in 1451. The church has been restored in the 19th century.
