Arzl im Pitztal Winter 2011

Arzl im Pitztal

The charming holiday village of Arzl is located in the beautiful Pitztal valley.

Altitude: 883 m asl

The municipality of Arzl im Pitztal is located at the entrance of the Pitztal valley on a terrace that is sheltered from the wind, between the northern slope of the Venet (2,513 m asl) and the Leiner Kögele (2,387 m asl) mountains. The component localities Wald im Pitztal, Bahnhof Imst,/Pitztal, Osterstein, Blons, Timmls, Hochasten, Ried and Leins belong to the municipality of Arzl. The name of the village derives from the term “arcella”, which means “little castle”. Exactly for this reason the emblem of the municipality shows a stylised castle. Due to the protection of the Lechtal Alps, despite of the elevated altitude various types of grain, potatoes, several fruits and even wine grows in this area.

Arzl has got several sights to offer, such as the Benni Raich bridge between Arzl and Wald, representing the highest pedestrian pendant bridge of Europe! Benjamin Raich, the famous Austrian alpine skiing athlete, was born in the village in 1978. This bridge, which is above all popular with bungee jumpers, is 94 m high and stretches across the so-called Pitzenklamm gorge. A further extraordinary construction is the highest suspension tower of Austria, boasting a hight of 107 m, which is located in the south of the village. To those who are interested in culture we highly recommend a visit to the parish church, dedicated to St. Ingenuin and Albuin. Located in idyllic position on a slope, it was built in late-Gothic style and converted to Baroque style later on.

Arzl im Pitztal is also a perfect spot for those who love hiking: the Luis Trenker trail, that was established in 1986, takes from the Walder bridge into the Pitzenklamm gorge, over which the Benni Raich bridge stretches. Proceed to the railway bridge at the Inn mouth, and return to Arzl on a trail. Schedule some 45 minutes for this hike. And beside the above mentioned bungee jumping, also rafting is one of the popular sports. Close to the village there is a starting point for rafting tours on the Inn river. Numerous possibilities regarding mountain biking, Nordic Walking as well as a sports and leisure time park complete the offer for adults, while kids can look forward to two game parks and a petting zoo. Also winter is an exciting season in Arzl! The Hochzeiger skiing area, which by the way is a popular hiking area in summer, is located only 15 km from the village and is easily reachable from Arzl by a ski shuttle service. Moreover the famous Pitztal Glacier as well as the Hochimst skiing area are located within easy reach. In the village of Arzl im Pitztal, there is a natural toboggan run, a cross-country ski run, an ice skating ground and the possibility to try curling.

Our recommendation: in the surroundings of Arzl, there are also earth pyramids! Walk from the Benni Raich bridge towards the village of Wald and follow the signpostings “Erdpyramiden Rundweg/Hohenegg” in order to reach this extraordinary natural monument.
