Spiss

Spiss is not only the highest located municipality of Austria, but is also one of the smallest with a number of not even 100 inhabitants

Altitude: 1,653 m a.s.l.

Spiss is located on the sunny side of the Samnaun Valley, at the border to the Swiss canton Grisons. The name of the village derives from the Latin word "spissus" (thicket, bush). A thicket is also illustrated on its coat of arms, behind which the Tyrolean eagle is peeking out...

For a long time, only a narrow path via a gorge led to Spiss from the Inn Valley. The construction of the road in 1980 enabled the access also from Austria, and the alpine village has turned into a quiet holiday resort with hundreds of km of hiking trails in the surroundings. One of them, quite demanding, takes you first to Mt. Muttakopf, and then along the ridge to the almost 2,700 m high Kreuzjoch and down to the Kobler Mountain Hut. The panoramic views along the path are simply breathtaking. Furthermore, the village offers several MTB trails and a large nature playground.

Spiss is located only a stone's throw from the duty-free area of Samnaun close to the Swiss border. This means in winter, that also the lift facilities of the Silvretta Arena, which is connected to Ischgl, are only a stone throw away. In the village or on the toboggan run Spiss, however, you can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
