Faggen Winter 2011

Faggen

This holiday resort at the beginning of the Kaunertal valley is an ideal starting point for cycling tours.

Altitude: 900 m asl

Great parts of the municipality Faggen are located on the alluvial fan of the Faggenbach river at the entrance to the Kaunertal valley. The name of the village has got Roman origins and means “village in an area of waters separated into several branches”, which in this case refers to the Faggenbach river. Also the emblem of the village with its three fan-shaped white lines points at this river. Anton Sturm, a sculptor of the Baroque and Rococo style, was born in Faggen in 1690 AD.

Today Faggen is a calm and small holiday resort which offers cycling and hiking tours for all levels of difficulty. Also the hiking areas Ried-Prutz-Fendels and Kaunertal valley are within easy reach and invite hikers and mountaineers to experience the world of mountains in the surroundings. Moreover Faggen is part of the Nature Park Kaunergrat, a protected part of the Alps that is also habitat of several threatened plant and animal species. The nature park visitors’ centre, a popular hiking destination, offers an interesting insight into the nature park, while the café-restaurant “Gachenblick” offers a breathtaking view on the upper Inntal valley and the surrounding mountains. Also several promenades and trails in the area of the Piller Sattel pass start at the visitor’s centre. The visitors’ centre, however, is located on the trail taking from the village Kaunerberg to the Piller Sattel pass.

In winter Faggen is a true winter sports paradise: the ski-pass “Ski6″ makes you access a ski and snowboard paradise with 340 km of ski slopes. The family skiing area Ried-Prutz-Fendels, offering the so-called “Bibi-Land”, which is of course highly popular with kids, is comfortable accessible by the lift facilities at Fendels. And at the head of the Kaunertal valley, there is the Kaunertal Glacier which, except for a short time-out in summer, is a whole-year round skiing area, taking you at 3,108 m asl. Other possibilities to make your holidays active are winter hiking, tobogganing and cross-country skiing…

Our recommendation: refreshing moments in summertime are guaranteed by the adventure pool in the neighbouring village Prutz, offering a 42 m long water slide. Particularly popular with adults and kids!
