Thurn

The sunny village of Thurn is located about 2 km above Lienz.

Altitude: 854 m asl

At the foot of the Zettersfeld mountain in the heart of the Lienz Dolomites, there is a holiday village in splendid suroundings: Thurn. In 1308 AD in this village there were two castles, one of which was the fortified and residential tower on the Schlössbichl hill. This is also where the name derives from: Thurn is another way of writing for “Turm”, which means “tower” in German. Moreover this area has been based on mining for a long period of time.

The churches and chapels in and around the village are something special: The St. Nikolaus church in the village, since 1943 also Fatima pilgrimage church, is really worth a visit, not only due to its high altar and the dais dating back to the 17th century. Also the St. Helena church, which can be reached via the Friedensweg path, is of utmost importance for the inhabitants of Thurn. For centuries it has been administered from the village and still today Christian feast days like Easter are celebrated in this church. However, if you would like to make a trip, take the road from Thurn to Zettersfeld, which is toll from May to November. Enjoy the great view on the surrounding mountains!

The surroundings of Thurn (see pic) are perfect for hikes. There is also a path that leads to the “Steinermandl Panorama” on 2,216 m asl, characterised by a splendid view on the Lienz Dolomites and the South Tyrolean Dolomites. The refuge at the top of the mountain offers local delicacies and is open from June to October. Otherwise you can choose the circular route Zettersfeld, leading you across meadows in full blossom. Our tip: A visit to Lake Neualplsee in summer is a refreshing adventure! On the way to the lake you can stop for a bite to eat in a refuge and enjoy good Tyrolean traditional fare.
