Exactly where the valleys Drautal, Pustertal and Iseltal meet, there is Lienz, the chief city of East Tyrol, featuring 13,000 inhabitants. Its Mediterranean climate, numerous possibilities regarding leisure time activities and its good reputation as cultural meeting point and shopping centre make Lienz a popular holiday destination. Relaxing: From June to September the beautiful main square is reserved to pedestrians, in order that you can better enjoy the city, stroll across the little shops and savour a Cappuccino in the sun.
Those who are interested in culture might look forward to Lienz (see pic): In Bruck Castle there is the museum of the city of Lienz and the Albin Egger-Lienz exhibition. Moreover the Tammerburg Castle is a popular venue for concerts and various performances. Outside the city there is the Roman site “Aguntum”, which is also worth to be visited. Maybe you prefer a slightly more modern sight? Directly in the centre there is a photo museum, which is unique of its kind. This is where record players and many more items are exhibited. What else? The only evangelic church of East Tyrol is located in Lienz and has been restaured in 1962.
For those who love hiking and nature, there is a dense network of hiking paths that leads you across the Hohe Tauern National Park and guarantees unique natural spectacles. The animals are only one of the highlights, as in this area numerous rare species like golden eagles and marmots have their natural habitat. In winter, however, there are three skiing areas in the surroundings: the areas Hochstein and Zettersfeld as well as the little Haiderhof lift facility, which is above all perfect for beginners and children.
Our tip: The wildlife park Assling outside the city provides a habitat for about 100 animal species. In an area of about 80,000 sqm you can admire them!
