Gaimberg
The holiday resort is located in the north of Lienz at the southern slopes of the Zettersfeld mountain.

In former centuries the entire sunny slope from Thurn to Nussdorf-Debant, so the speak the area in the north of Lienz, used to be called Gaimberg. Later on Gaimberg denominated the municipality, which is composed of the component localities Grafendorf, Obergaimberg, Untergaimberg, Wartschensiedlung and Kranzhofsiedlung. In the village remnants of a Roman villa and parts of a bronze statue were found, suggesting a very early settlement of the area. The emblem of the municipality illustrates a green head of a dragon on yellow ground, reminding on a significant noble family of Mediaeval times.
Despite of the fact that the municipal area extends from 700 to 2,000 m asl, fruits and corn are cultivated thanks to its sunny orientation. In the village there is a tennis court offering a wonderful view on the Lienz Dolomites. Moreover great hiking trails snake their way along the bottom of the valley and also in the area of the Zettersfeld mountain, which makes part of the Schobergruppe mountain range. Of course there are also several mountain huts and refuges to stay overnight. The Zettersfeld mountain itself, on the slopes of which the village extends, is a famous skiing area in winter, extending from 1,670 to 2,278 m asl and offering some 40 km of ski slopes as well as deep powder snow and mogul fields. Not only for its dimensions the “sun terrace of Lienz”, as the Zettersfeld skiing area is also called, is also popular with families!
A popular sight in the village is the St. Bartholomew parish church, constructed in 1411 AD. Originally built in Gothic construction style, it was converted to Baroque style in 1834 and taken back to its original style in 1900. Interesting in the interior is in particular the neo-Gothic winged altar by Karl Untergasser. Also worth to be visited is the vault chapel in the cemetery, which is a popular destination for creditors.
Our recommendation: paragliders and hang-gliders feel at ease at Gaimberg, as good thermal conditions make great flights in the Lienz Dolomites possible!
