Ainet

Alpine pastures make up half of the municipal area of Ainet.

Ainet in the lower Iseltal valley was first mentioned in 1277 AD as “Ayned”, which means “wasteland”. In 1939 the villages of Ainet, Alkus, Gwabl and Schlaiten joined to form the municipality of Ainet, whereby Schlaiten became independent again in 1949. The single farms are spread up to an altitude of 1,300 m asl. The emblem of the municipality illustrates the St. Ulrich cross, symbol of the local patron saint. The three coloured fields (blue, yellow, red), however, remind on the localities of Ainet, Alkus and Gwabl as former independent municipalities.

Here at Ainet the air is still crystal clear and nature is still unspoilt! It exerts particular attraction on those who seek relaxation and recreation, as it is surrounded by the magnificent mountains of East Tyrol. By the way, half of the municipal area consists of alpine pastures, while a further third is made up of forests. Popular excursion destinations in the holiday resort are the natural stone educational trail as well as the Weiherburg castle which was established by the Lords of Wolkenstein-Rodenegg as hunting castle and burnt down soon after. In 1932 it was reconstructed as estate. Another attraction is of course the National Park Hohe Tauern, which is the largest national park of Austria, extending to Carinthia and Salzburg.

Those who seek an adrenaline thrill, however, are going to feel at ease at the “Outdoor Camp Osttirol Adventures”. The camp is located along the riverside of the Isel, which is the largest glacial river of East Tyrol, perfect for kayaking and rafting tours. Those who prefer the height can make unforgettable experiences in the high rope course that is also TÜV-certified, taking you across the tree tops at a height of 8 to 14 metres. And on the evening of a great day on holidays you can recall the day at the camp-fire or on the terrace of the barbecue inn. This is where you can taste a delicious grilled plate and a cool beer…

Our recommendation: in 1825 the sculptor Jakob Gilber was born in Ainet, whose pieces of art can still be admired in the abbey church of the Admont monastery (cross altar) and in the votive church of Vienna. The reliefs of the stations of the cross in the parish church of Ainet are also among his masterpieces!
