Heiterwang Winter 2011

Heiterwang

The holiday resort Heiterwang is located in idyllic position at the shores of the homonymous lake and at the foot of the Zugspitze mountain.

Altitude: 994 m asl

Heiterwang is located in the south of Reutte along the road to Passo Resia and the Fernpass, which transformed this settlement into a place of handling, posting station and horse changing early in time. The name of the village originates from the term “Ayterwanch”, which means “stinging nettle meadow”. A golden nettle on the emblem refers to this fact, while wave and fishes symbolize Lake Heiterwang.

Lake Heiterwang is connected with Lake Plansee by a canal, resulting in a water surface of 8 km length. Already in ancient times the lake was popular due to its richness in fish - Archduke Siegmund and the Emperor Maximilian were particularly attracted by the village. Today Lake Heiterwang is above all popular for the variety of activities you can choose from, ranging from rowing, surfing and swimming to fishing and boating. Moreover a 6 km long jogging course as well as a 21 km long Nordic Walking trail are available, taking you round the lake. Those who prefer rather comfortable promenades are welcome on the Moorlehrpfad educational trail. Also riding stables and the carriage express have become more and more popular. And the local mountain of Heiterwang, which is the 2,341 m high Thaneller, is a well-liked destination for hikers from spring to late autumn.

Due to its location, Heiterwang is also considered to be the gate to the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. This area, dominated by the nearly 3,000 m high Zugspitze mountain, is a popular hiking area in summer. In winter, however, it transforms into a great ski region with 152 km of ski slopes. 52 state-of-the-art lift facilities as well as cosy mountain ski huts make skiing and snowboarding even more popular in this ski resort. Directly in the village, there is a little exercising slope called Karlift, which is often venue for several ski races of local associations. In 2006 Heiterwang was venue for the Austrian Championships in cross-country skiing, staged along the 100 km long cross-country ski trail network of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena. A toboggan run as well as a natural ice skating area provide variety in winter.

Our recommendation: every year in autumn, there is a popular running event taking place in this area, which is the Heiterwanger Seelauf run!
