Gramais

Gramais in the Lechtal valley, today included in the Tiroler Lech Nature Park, is the smallest autonomous municipality of Austria

Altitude: 1,321 m a.s.l.

Gramais, located in a side valley of the Lechtal valley branching off from Häselgehr, is accessible on a well-developed road. With only 41 inhabitants on the 1st of January 2021, the mountain village is the smallest autonomous municipality of Austria. The origins of its name date back to the Latin term "graminosa" (grassy). Until 1650, the deceased had to be carried over the mountains to Imst where they were sepulchred - today, Gramais features its own church with cemetery.

Sojourn in the village and breath the crystal clear mountain air, enjoy the surrounding peaks and experience the five mountain lakes. Well-liked destinations in the surroundings and in the Tiroler Lech Nature Park are the 2,733 m high Mt. Dremelspitze and Mt. Grosse Schlenkerspitze, known also among climbers. In the heart of this area there is the crystal-clear Lake Kogelsee.

In winter, the valley comprises a variety of cross-country ski trails, such as the 3 km long Gramais Circuit. Forest tracks and wide panorama tracks form a 190 km long cross-country ski network which includes also the first Nordic WISBI course of Europe, with a chronometer for timekeeping.
