Breitenwang
The popular holiday resort Breitenwang is located in the valley basin of Reutte.
Altitude: 854 m asl
The municipality of Breitenwang is composed of the component localities Lähn, Mühl, Neumühl, Breitenwang and Plansee. Parts of Lake Plansee belong to Breitenwang, while the rest is part of Heiterwang. “Breitinwanc” has been mentioned for the first time in 1094 AD and means “wide meadow”. This is also the reason why the municipal emblem illustrates a meadow with a bird. When the German-Roman Emperor Lothar III died in a local farm passing through Breitenwang in 1137, this year went down in history. Still today there is an inscription in the village remembering this tragedy.
Those who are interested in culture might appreciate the deanery church, dedicated to the Saints Petrus and Paulus, which is a real jewel! The ceiling fresco in the choir dating back to 1755 illustrates the key delivery to Petrus and has been realised by Johann Jakob Zeiler. In the vestry, however, there are four rococo silver relics busts representing the apostles Petrus and Paulus and the two pest patrons Sebastian and Rochus. The resurrection chapel (Auferstehungskapelle) is decorated by stucco medallions dating back to 1725, representing the dance of the death. Of particular interest are also the Kaiserbrunnen fountain in the village of Plansee as well as the four chapels of the municipality: the Frauenbrünnl chapel, the St. Antonius chapel, the Koloman chapel and the Auxilary Saints chapel (Nothelferkapelle).
Breitenwang is located in the region of Reutte, which is also considered to be the “gate to Tyrol”. Also parts of Lake Plansee are part of the municipal area. Second only to Lake Achensee, Lake Plansee, including a surface of 280 hectares, is the largest lake of Tyrol. Lake Heiterwang and Lake Plansee are connected by a canal. Perfect terrain are the lakes above all for divers, as the good water quality of level I enables a visibility of up to 15 m. In the surroundings of the lake you can fully relax by jogging, Nordic Walking, cycling or mountaineering in the Lechtal Alps and in the Wetterstein and Mieminger mountain chains. Together with the environs, Lake Plansee represents a spot of intact and idyllic nature. Also those who love winter sports can look forward to their holidays at Breitenwang. Some 120 km of cross-country ski trails snake in this area, moreover the Reuttener Seilbahnen-Hahnenkamm skiing area offers 15 km of ski slopes and 7 modern lift facilities.
Our recommendation: the “Allgäu-Tyrol-Family-Ski-Card” makes you access 81 lift facilities, including the Reuttener Seilbahnen lifts.
