Hiking in the wonderful world of the Lechtal Alps
Altitude: 1,079 m asl
Bichlbach has been mentioned for the first time around 1300 AD as “Puechelpach”, which means a river surrounded by beeches. The settlement of this area started from the Allgäu. Until 1859 the village was the seat of a bricklayer and carpenter craft, a fact that is still remembered by the craft church dedicated to St. Joseph, which is the only preserved church of this kind in the germanophone area. Also the emblem of Bichlbach depicts St. Joseph, the patron saint of craftsmen. By the way: Nicole Hosp, world champion in alpine skiing, is one of the most famous citizens of Bichlbach!
The village is surrounded by the Lechtal Alps and the Zugspitze mountain. In summer these mountains are perfect terrain for those who love cycling and mountaineering. Famous hikes are the Auerwald round trail, the Bichlrundgang circular route as well as the trails taking you on the Kohlbergspitze mountain, the Niederjoch pass and to the Lähner pasture. And in the village you can find a petting zoo and a natural lake for bathing. In the little zoo there are goats, pigs, monkeys, lamas and rabbits to be admired. Moreover there is a game area with race course as well as the “Zwergerlwelt”, a world of dwarfs that provides an insight into the fascinating realm of this species. The bathing lake, which is the second attraction we mentioned above, includes a swimming area of 1,400 sqm and is integrated into the Bichlbach sports and leisure park located in the centre of the village. Also a miniature golf course, a beach volley field, several tennis courts, a small football field and a children’s playground are available in the sports and leisure park.
Those who love winter sports can look forward to their holidays! The Almkopfbahn lift facility takes you into the Berwangertal skiing area, offering some 36 km of well-groomed slopes. This skiing area connects the villages of Bichlbach, Berwang and Rinnen and also includes 20 km of cross-country ski trails, an ice skating area as well as numerous winter hiking trails. By the way, this skiing area is snow-sure until after Easter! The Berwangertal skiing area is integrated in the ski region Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, offering a variety of 152 km of slopes, so boredom does not even exist in this area!
Our recommendation: the guild museum of Bichlbach documents the history of the guides and crafts in the Ausserfern region. The exhibited objects as well as special exhibitions provide interesting information about the work of painters, bricklayers and carpenters. An absolute must is also a visit to the craft church we mentioned above, which is the only preserved of its kind in the germanophone area!
