Altitude: 668 m asl
Walchsee is located only 18 km from Kufstein on the border to Chiemgau/Germany. According to a legend, once upon a time there has been a large forest on the place where the lake is siutated today. This forest belonged to two farmers, which both wanted to own the forest. During a struggle for the possession of this forest, the sky darkened and the farmers got caught in a thunderstorm, which ended up in a huge bang. At the place where the farmers had struggled before, a large spring gaped and flooded the area… the farmers have never apperaed again in this area.
The lake (see pic) is also illustrated on the emblem of the village and of course the lake is first-choice destination both for inhabitants and vacationers. Boasting an average temperature of about 24 degrees, Lake Walchsee is not only perfect for bathing, but also for rowing, sailing and waterskiing. Beginners can risk a first attempt in the water sports centre. You need a rush of adrenaline? So come to the “Zahmer Kaiser” leisure centre, where you can have fun on two summer sledge tracks. And only 10 km from Lake Walchsee you can enjoy wildwater rafting and canyoning in Kössen…
In winter the lift facilites “Zahmer Kaiser” take you on 1,100 m asl, where 25 km of ski slopes are waiting to be explored. Fun and action is also provided by four toboggan runs. Due to the fact that Walchsee-Rettenschöss and Kössen-Schwendt joined in the holiday area Kaiserwinkl, you might get discounts for several services. Whatever you do, the winter landscape will enchant you!
Our tip: The area round the Walchsee lake is the largest preserved marshland area in North Tyrol, including an area of 63 hectares. This wetland area is characterized by a varied flora and fauna, including even a flesh-eating plant, which is the sundew.
