Niederndorf
At the foot of the Kaiser mountain chain, there is the village of Niederndorf, which has a very long history.
Altitude: 500 m asl
The area of Niederndorf has been settled already very early in prehistoric times. That’s a matter of fact, proven by a bronze belt buckle that has been found in the locality of Hölzelsau, dated around 400 BC. Later on Romans settled down in this area, who decided to open this area up by a Roman Road from Erl to this village. The first school was mentioned in documents dating back on 1696 AD.
The local mountain of Niederndorf is the forested Hechenberg, on which also the pilgrimage chapel Maria Heimsuchung is located. A trail called “Hechenbergrundgang” takes promenaders from the village to Mariahilf and also past this pilgrimage sight, all within about one hour. Of course in summer also the nearby Kaiser mountain chain is an attraction for all those who love mountaineering, climbing and mountain biking and the nature reserve Kaisertal is more than a natural jewel. The course across this valley is considered to be one of the most impressive hikes in the Kaiser mountain chain! There is also a refreshing leisure-time facility at Niederndorf: the forest pool includes numerous attractions such as water canons, a river for kids, a gush shower and a pool with jet stream as well as beach volley fields and a skate and street-soccer park in the nearby leisure-time sports park.
In winter, however, cross-country skiers can look forward to 10 km of trails snaking in the snow-covered landscape. Moreover there are two skiing areas that are easily reachable: the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental offering about 279 km of ski runs as well as the Zahmer Kaiser - Walchsee skiing area, located about 4 km from Niederndorf and connected with the village by a free shuttle service. By the way: every three years there is a huge carnival parade at Niederndorf. The exact meeting time for carnival Saturday is then 2.14 pm…
Our recommendation: every year on December 29, at Niederndorf there is the so-called “Thomas’ night”. In this night in the centre of the village the old year is expelled, and of course there is also tasty mulled wine!
