Altitude: 575 m asl
Surrounded by the mountains of the Inntal valley, Mariastein is located at 575 m asl. Above the village, there is the castle with its high donjon, which has been constructed in order to protect the old Roman Road. The white castle chapel dates back to the 14th century and has been declared a pilgrimage site in the 16th century. This is where you can visit a lushly decorated chapel. Already in Mediaeval times, numerous pilgrims visit the chapel, accessible via 150 steps, in order to invocate the Gothic Madonna, seeking aid.
The emblem of the village illustrates the Mother of God with Jesus in her arms pointing at Mariastein as pilgrimage site. Summer is of course characterized by the Kitzbühel Alps and one of the most popular destinations is the Hohe Salve mountain, offering a turnable panorama terrace as well as theme parks in the surroundings of the mountain. Especially children can look forward to this place! In the village itself you can walk from the pilgrimage church via a hiking trail, the so called “Kapellenweg”, to the Steinkapelle chapel (walking time: 1 - 1.5 hours).
Also winter is a pleasant season in Mariastein, particularly popular are horse-drawn sleigh rides as well as winter hiking. Hiking across idyllic and intact natural landscape, with the steeple of the pilgrimage church rising in the distance, is an unforgettable experience! If you prefer skiing, enjoy the 279 km of well-groomed ski slopes in the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental, the largest ski carousel of Austria.
Our recommendation: visit the castle museum, this is where the Tyrolean insignia, including the head of the archduke and his sceptre, can be admired!
