Kirchbichl

The holiday resort of Kirchbichl, located at the Inn river, is one of the oldest villages in the Inntal valley.

Altitude: 515 m asl

Kirchbichl and its seven component localities Oberndorf, Bichlwang, Kastengstatt, Winkelheim, Boden, Bruckhäusl and Ort is located at the junction of the Brixental and Unterinntal valleys. The emblem of the village depicts two black chimneys and three white ships on red background, referring to its economic importance in former centuries.

Part of the municipal area is also the so-called “Grattenbergl”, which in the Hallstatt period, belonging to the Iron Age, was the largest settlement of North Tyrol. Two walls of the settlement remained up to the present. Moreover the rock knoll of the “Grattenbergl” was venue for Tyrolean freedom fights against Bavarians and Frenchmen. The name Kirchbichl, however, refers to the village spread round the hill of the church (”Bichl” in Austrian dialect means “hill”, while “Kirche” means “church”) and was first documented in 1150 AD. For several centuries the locality of Kastengstatt was the main centre of mining in the Brixental valley. From the small Inn haven, the yields were carried on. The smelt-works in the village was in operation from the 16th to the 19th century.

At Kirchbichl there is a curative mud-bath with a maximum depth of about 3 metres. A football field, a beach volley field and tennis courts make your active holidays varied, whereas for kids there is a children’s playground. Those who love culture should visit the Assumption church (Maria Himmelfahrt), mainly characterized by beautiful Baroque elements. Originally log-built between the 12th and the 14th century, in the 18th century this church has been converted to Baroque style. In winter you can choose from skiing in the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental, offering 279 km of ski runs, which is by the way the largest connected skiing area of Austria, as well as from cross-country skiing, curling or ice skating.

Our recommendation: in Christmas time, there is a gorgeous Christmas market at Kirchbichl, called “Kirchbichler Vorweihnacht”, conferring a solemn atmosphere to the village!
