Kitzbühel 2009

Kitzbühel

Kitzbühel is one of the most famous Austrian winter holiday resorts.

Altitude: 800 m asl

Featuring about 8,000 inhabitants and an area of about 58 sqm, Kitzbühel combines all advantages of a small town, characterised by its idyllic position in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps. “Chizbuhel” has been mentioned for the first time in the 12th century and its name derives from “Chizzo”, a Bavarian clan, and “Buhel”, which indicates the position of the locality on a hill. However, a lively past characterises the small town and its surroundings.

In summer the Alpine Flower Garden on the Kitzbüheler Horn is one of the most popular hiking destinations and also a hike to the Kitzbüheler Horn panoramic road is a must for every visitor. However, this is only a small selection of trails, as Kitzbühel has got some 500 km of hiking trails to offer. By the way, the only curling hall of Austria is located in… right, Kitzbühel! Furthermore the leisure time offers include a golf course, bathing lakes and some 750 km of cycling and mountainbike trails. Those who prefer less active holidays might enjoy a shopping tour or a Cappuccino in the centre of town (see pic).

The Hahnenkamm mountain might be a household name for you, because this is where every year an important alpine skiing competition is staged. However, not only this slope attracts ski fans, as the skiing area includes a total of 148 km of ski slopes that can be discovered day by day. Moreover there are 120 km of cross-country ski tracks and 170 km of winter hiking paths. Also a couple of famous people come from Kitzbühel, as for example the ski racer and singer Hansi Hinterseer or Klaus Sulzenbacher, an athlete of Nordic combined.

Our tip: A ride with the lift facility that connects the skiing areas Hahnenkamm-Pengelstein and Jochberg-Resterhöhe. This lift facility is known under the name “3S-Bahn” and it is the funicular with the highest ground clearance (400 metres) worldwide. Really exciting!
