The well-known Lizumer Hütte mountain hut (2,019 m asl) belongs to the municipal territory of Wattenberg.
Altitude: 1,050 m asl
Wattenberg is a village in the Tiroler Unterland area, extending at the east slope of the Wattental valley. Already in prehistoric times the alpine pastures in the surroundings were farmed. Today the village includes numerous hamlets and farms spread on a vast area. The emblem of the municipality illustrates a school kid with exercise book and pen that stands on one hill with each leg. This is meant to remind on former times, when the local school was attended by children of both sides of the valley. By the way: already in 1524 a school was documented in Wattenberg.
Part of the picturesque mountain village is the so-called Wattentaler Lizum, a popular hiking area in summer and a well-liked ski touring area in winter. Close to this place, there is the exercising area Lizum-Walchen for Austrian troupes. The Wattentaler Lizum includes the east end of the Wattental valley (”Lizum“ means “alpine pasture at the head of the valley”), where also the Lizumer Hütte mountain hut is located. This mountain hut is a popular excursion destination in all seasons, as in 2007 e.g. it became one of the six best mountain refuges for ski touring in the East Alps, while in 2008 the official quality seal for hiking paths was awarded to this refuge for the “Glungezer & Geier Route”. Its location is ideal for longer tours: also the Adlerweg trail, the Munich-Venice hiking trail as well as the Via Alpina snake past this hut.
Another peculiarity of Wattenberg are its Swiss pine forests which belong to the largest of Tyrol. These forests were already farmed in the times of the empress Maria Theresia. Also worth mentioning is the Mölstal valley, where the most ancient iron mine of North Tyrol is located at an altitude of 2,500 m asl! A walk across the village makes you discover several farms that were restored with devotion as well as numerous chapels. Idyllic!
Our recommendation: the Lizumer Hütte mountain hut is ideal to observe the starlit sky, e.g. at new moon and with clear weather!
