Very popular: the high altitude path
Altitude: 909 m asl
The municipality Sellrain is located in the Sellraintal valley, at the foot of the 2,577 m high Windegg mountain in the northern Stubai Alps. A total of nine villages form the municipal area, one of which is Sellrain along the Sellrain land road, the component locality Sonnenberg at the slope and the Fotschertal valley branching off at Sellrain. Already in Stone Age the Sellraintal valley was a popular hunting area. The village, however, was first mentioned in 1289 AD.
In the course of time the village was established round the mineral spring of Rothenbrunn, which was already known in Mediaeval times. The water containing iron attracted people from all over. Today there are several buildings that are worth to be visited, such as the pilgrimage church St. Quirin, which is the oldest church of the municipality and the entire valley. It can be seen from afar and is located at the scarp, inhabitants use to call it “Sankt Krein”. This church is also illustrated on the emblem of the municipality as black outline on a green scarp. The Late Gothic wall paintings and wood-carved figurines date back to the time around 1400 - 1500. Equally worth to be visited is the granary in the Sellraintal valley, which was constructed of river stones, as well as several further churches in the village, in case you are interested in sacred buildings and arts. One of these churches is the Saint Catherine parish church and the Gries im Sellrain parish church. Only a stone’s throw from the village, there is Oberperfuss which is famous for its Christmas cribs - a great excursion destination in Advent.
The Fotschertal valley, located only a stone’s throw from the village, is part of the municipal area and a popular hiking area. The 15 km long valley up to the Potsdamer Hütte mountain hut is accessible via a driveway. The well-marked trails take you from the mountain hut to the pastures and summits, along mountain streams, grazing cows and alpine roses. The crystal clear air and the great panorama you can enjoy on the mountains play a part in contributing to your relaxation and well-being. Popular hiking destinations are the Schaflegerkogel (2,405 m), Fotscher Windegg (2,577 m) and Rote Kogel (2,836 m) mountains, while for climbing the peaks of the Hohe Villerspitze and Lüsner Villerspitze, both more than 3,000 m high, are well-liked. In winter this valley is a great spot for those who love tobogganing and ski touring.
Our recommendation: in this little village, there are 36 bridges, connecting the single component localities. Really special!
