Ranggen

The holiday resort of Ranggen is located at the foot of the Rangger Köpfl mountain, a well-liked hiking and skiing area.

Ausserdorf, Oberdorf and Unterdorf as well as numerous hamlets form the municipality of Ranggen, located in a hollow of the Inntal terrace at the Rettenbach riverside. The term Ranggen derives from “rank” and means “hillside, slope”. The emblem of the municipality illustrates green steps on black ground, representing the location of Ranggen at the Inntal terrace. Moreover there is a white dragon, which is the brisure of the patron saint, Saint Magnus. It also represents the dangerously steep “Reissender Ranggen”, a hillside at the village.

The highest elevation, so to speak the local mountain of Ranggen, is the 1,939 m high Rangger Köpfl. This mountain, parts of which belongs to the municipal territory, is a popular hiking area in summer. It is accessible by a gondola cableway located only 2 km away in Oberperfuss. The summit offers an astonishingly beautiful view on the Lechtal Alps and the Mieminger, the Wetterstein, the Kaiser and the Karwendel mountain chains, the Tux Alps and the Stubai Glacier. In winter it transforms into a small but mighty skiing area with 17 km of ski slopes and one of the longest toboggan runs of 8 km with an altitude difference of 1,000 m. Fun and action for the whole family! Also well-liked is the 5 km long cycle path taking you to Ranggen…

In 2005 in the municipal area the trail “Weg der Befreiung” was established. It starts at the parish church and takes you to the resurrection chapel, an ideal spot for recharging one’s batteries. Along the trail there are seven stations, e.g. the over-dimensional hands that seem to collect the water of the little waterfall. These pieces of art, the “seven masterpieces of mercy”, are aimed at reminding that giving is more important than taking. Also the Saint Magnus parish church, the starting point for this contemplative trail, is worth to be visited, as it boasts one of the most beautiful vestries of Tyrol. By the way: the Olympic City of Innsbruck is only 17 km away. It does not only offer interesting museums and sights such as the Golden Roof, but is also an ideal place for shopping!

Our recommendation: a peculiarity is the estate Ferklehen, which was entitled to supervise the Inn ferry boat. As this privilege was also called “Fergen”, the term Ferklehen originates from it. When in 1482 the Inn bridge was built and the ferry boat was no longer in service, the estate was entrusted with maintaining the bridge.
