Pettnau

Altitude: 628 m a.s.l.

Seven component localities form the municipality of Pettnau near Innsbruck, not to be confused with the village Pettneu am Arlberg. The coat of arms shows Saint Christopher, carrying baby Jesus over the sea on his shoulders: It is the symbol for the ferries that travelled on the Inn river.

Pettnau, however, boasts its own fishery as well as the horse riding stable Oberpettnau. In winter, due to the favourable location, several famous skiing areas such as Seefeld, Axamer Lizum, Sölden and Kühtai, the highest located winter sports resort of Austria, are within easy reach. During a walk through the village centre, you can take a look at the Mellauner Farm with its Baroque paintings on the façade. In 1291, it was mentioned for the first time. This former knights' estate and post station with its stables is one of the most ancient taverns of Tyrol today and draws attention.

The Mellauner Hof is used as a restaurant and a hotel. Inside there's still the "Alte Selche", a smoke facility extending between the ground floor and the attic which is still in use. The smoked bacon is sold in the small shop of the building. The church in the component locality of Leiblfing, however, is considered to be the symbol of Pettnau and represents one of the most photographed scenes of North Tyrol. It was illustrated on the postcards, sent at that time from Pettnau all over the world.
