Oberhofen 2011

Oberhofen im Inntal

Oberhofen im Inntal is located, as the name of the village reveals, on the southern side of the Inntal valley.

Altitude: 622 m asl

The Rietzer Grieskogel is the highest elevation in the area of Oberhofen im Inntal, a village with some 1,700 inhabitants. Only in 1786 the village has become autonomous, when it was separated from Pfaffenhofen. The emblem of the municipality illustrates a red bar and below a blue pinnacle on white ground. This symbol follows the emblem of the municipality of the Bavarian village of Schlehdorf, whose cloisters received properties in Oberhofen in the 8th century. In this context the village was first mentioned as “Oparinhof”.

The great mountains of North Tyrol are ideal for extended hikes and mountain tours. Popular destinations are the local mountain, the 2,884 m high Rietzer Grieskogel, or the Oberhofer Galtalm pasture. The trail that takes you to this alpine pasture starts in the village and takes you to the Kohlerkapelle chapel and across the Flaurlinger valley to the Oberhofer Galtalm pasture at 1,614 m asl. The pasture is open in summer and this is also where you can taste local products made on the alpine pasture. If you aim even higher, within two hours you reach the Oberhofer Melkalm pasture, or the Pfaffenhof Alm pasture at 1,694 m asl. By the way: at the Oberhofer Melkalm pasture in summer there is a Holy Mass under the open sky, with music interludes of flugelhorns, brass, woodwind payers and alpenhorn players. Recommendable is also a hike across the village, past its large number of chapels which are ideal places to pause for a moment and enjoy the great outdoors.

However, the small but mighty holiday resort of Oberhofen was able to preserve its rural character, which is particularly noticeable at the northern edge of the village, where ancient farms are placed next to each other along the riverbank of the Inn. The Baroque parish church is dedicated to Saint Nicolas and dates back to the 18th century. Particularly striking are the stucco works in the interior. Moreover you should visit the local museum of Oberhofen which is open in summer: ancient documents and several exhibits provide an insight into the history of the village.

Our recommendation: the farms, lushly decorated with flowers, are omnipresent and are perfect accommodations if you would like to spend farm holidays. A particular experience, above all for kids!
