The municipality of Mils is located on the largest alluvial fan of the Inntal valley in terms of surface area. In 930 AD it was first mentioned, despite of the fact that findings indicate a much earlier settlement in pre-Roman times. The upper part of the emblem of the municipality shows a chequered pattern, while below there is a white unicorn. Both elements derive from the emblem of an aristocratic family that had been residing in this area in those days, while the star refers to Mils as former pilgrimage site.
Once upon a time the sunny village was a famous pilgrimage site, until the parish church burnt down in a conflagration in August 1791. Subsequently Mils more and more passed into oblivion as religious destination. Today it is a pleasant and calm holiday resort located close to Hall in Tirol and Innsbruck. On its hiking and bike trails you can discover the surroundings of Mils, located at the foot of the Karwendel mountain chain. This area is above all known for its Karwendel Alpine Park, one of the largest nature reserves of the East Alps. Hiking in this protected area stands for pure relaxation, thanks above all for its unique flora and fauna. Inline skating and tennis complete the offer in the village. In winter, however, there is a toboggan run that is illuminated at night-time, as well as cross-country ski runs.
Also the churches of the village are worth to be noticed, as originally Mils was a famous pilgrimage site. The Mary Assumption (Maria Himmelfahrt) parish church that was rebuilt after the devastating fire was inaugurated in 1804. In the interior it boasts the so-called “Gnadenmutter von Mils”, a statue dating back to the 15th century, which survived the fire. The late Gothic Anna chapel was built in the 16th century by miners who settled down in Mils and who decided to have their patron saint built a chapel. This building is famous in the entire Alpine area for its life-size “Ölberggruppe”, a piece of art. And of course you seek relaxation after an adventuresome day on holidays. In this case we recommend you the first Day Spa of Tyrol, located in the village. The offer includes a sauna landscape, a fit active studio, cosmetics and massages as well as a lounge and a lagoon with sea water basin.
Our recommendation: one of the most famous choirs of Tyrol, the “Oswald Milser Choir” also comes from this village. Maybe you can attend one of its concerts when you are on holidays?
