Grinzens

Grinzens, the most western village of the sunny plateau of Innsbruck, has got its own theatre stage, the famous ”Sendersbühne”

Altitude: 945 m a.s.l.

Grinzens is located in the south-west of Innsbruck, at the entrance to the Sellrain Valley. The village area comprises several hamlets - its name means "branches". Already before the 13th century, the area served as pasture-land. In 1400 AD, documents of the Frauenchiemsee Convent provide evidence for nine farms in the municipality. For a long period of time, flax cultivation represented the major economic branch in the village, while today Grinzens is a popular holiday resort.

Grinzens is a perfect starting point for hikes, as several trails take you across the Sellrain Valley or towards Innsbruck and its peaks, such as Mt. Patscherkofel. Well-known for its fabulous view is the hike from Grinzens to the Axamer Kögele. In this 3-hour tour you walk past the "Katzenlöcher" (Cat Holes) to the Fritzenhütte, a hunting hut at more than 1,500 m a.s.l., until you reach the ridge.

And of course also in winter this village offers several attractions. In the heart of a fairytale-landscape Grinzens is located between two famous skiing areas, Kühtai and Axamer Lizum. Kühtai is known as the highest located skiing village of Austria, while the Axamer Lizum Skiing Area features a 300 hectares large Freeride Area, the Golden Roofpark, a Fun Slope and a RaceCorner. In addition, Grinzens offers an ice skating ground in the village, the natural toboggan run of the Kematen Mountain Hut and some well-groomed winter hiking trails.
