Altitude: 1,187 m asl
Part of the municipality of Gries im Sellrain, located 25 km from Innsbruck, are also several hamlets located at the slopes, the bottom of the valley between Muren/Obergries and Untermarendebach, as well as the rear part of the Lüsenstal valley, branching off in this area. At Gries the Sellraintal valley branches out into the Untertal and Obertal valleys, leading into the neighbouring Nedertal valley via the famous mountain village Kühtai. The emblem of the municipality shows three pinnacles in the colours black and silver, representing the 3,298 m high Lüsener Fernerkogel mountain, which characterizes the view of Gries im Sellrain.
Gries and the Sellraintal valley are particularly popular with vacationers who seek relaxations and calm! In summer the village is a great starting point for hikes. Gries itself is located in idyllic position at the foot of the Freihut (2,616 m asl) and Rosskogel (3,081 m asl) mountains, both belonging to the Stubai Alps. You will be spoilt for choice, no matter if you prefer pleasant walks in the surroundings of the village, from pasture to pasture or if you aim higher on the top of the mountains. A tour has of course to be combined with a typical Tyrolean afternoon snack called “Brettljause”, as nowhere else cheese and bacon are more tasty than on the mountains! A popular destination is the Juifenalm pasture at 2,022 m asl, which is well-known for its good traditional fare, and the panoramic view from the Zischgeles mountain on the Freihut and the Sellrainer Sonnenberg mountains. The hiking trail n°1 takes you from the village to Juifenau via a forest trail, and then directly to the alpine pasture in about two hours. In Gries, there is a Kneipp facility where you can bring your muscles to heel after an exhausting walk. Regarding sport offers, there is also a tennis court and a beach volley field.
In winter, however, from the above mentioned Juifenalm pasture, a toboggan run starts. Also the skiing area Kühtai is located in the surroundings and is accessible within 20 minutes only. Austrias’ highest located winter sports resort does not only offer 41 km of ski slopes, but also 15 km of cross-country ski runs. And also for ski tours there are plenty of destinations, such as the Rosskogel or the Lüsener Fernerkogel mountains.
Our recommendation: a real attraction for the little guests is the “Murmel Abenteuerspielplatz” adventure playground, where everyone can be a marmot. Hand over hand along a rope, balancing, with the cableway across the playground… there are many adventures for kids!
