Prägraten am Grossvenediger

At the head of the romantic Virgental valley there is Prägraten am Grossvenediger with its five hamlets

Altitude: 1,312 m a.s.l.

Bobojoch, Wallhorn, St. Andrä, Hinterbichl, Bichl and Prägraten itself form the municipal area of Prägraten at the foot of the majestic Grossvenediger. Despite of its mountainous position, it has already been inhabited in the 5th century AD, probably due to the copper occurrence in the area. With only seven inhabitants per sqkm, still today Prägraten features a low population density.

Basically behind the village rises Mt. Grossvenediger with its impressive 3,657 m a.s.l. The glaciated mountain is located on the main Alpine ridge, on the border between East Tyrol and Salzburg. The major part of the village is included in the High Tauern National Park and offers fabulous hiking paths, which show you the beauty and the flora and fauna of the protected area: The Venediger High Route and the Lasörling High Route are among the most beautiful. Likewise impressive is the Umbal Waterfalls Water Trail, which demonstrates the power of a glacial stream.

Winter in Prägraten obviously stands for holidays on the snow. Besides an Ice skating rink, located in the local recreational facility, you can find two skiing areas in the surroundings. Near the village there are the two Bichllifte ski lifts, and from Matrei in Osttirol, 13 km away, start the Matreier Goldried Cable Cars into the Grossglockner Resort Kals-Matrei Ski Region.
