Heinfels

The name of Heinfels in the Hochpustertal valley derives from the castle enthroning the village

Altitude: 1,078 m a.s.l.

The municipality of Heinfels includes several component localities, among them also Panzendorf and Tessenberg, both once independent municipalities. The wide area was controlled for centuries by the Counts of Gorizia. Some decades ago, however, a climbing rose with red blossoms was named Heinfels, cultivated by the internationally known rose grower Karl Hetzel.

Nowadays, Heinfels is ruled by two other institutions: One of them is the mighty castle that rises above the village. Some foot paths leads you up to the building, offering a beautiful view. In 2020, a museum with an indoor and outdoor area of 1,000 sqm as well as a tavern were opened in its inside. The museum tells about the castle complex with its arrow slits and the surrounding area.

Another highlight is the World of Goodness and Pastry Workshop of the biscuit and waffle producer Loacker, the best place to produce your very own biscuits and take them home. Located in the south of the main chain of the Alps, Heinfels is also a perfect starting point for excursions to Lienz and to South Tyrol in Italy, as well as for hikes in the beautiful mountain landscape and for downhill runs by ski or snowboard in the Sillian Hochpustertal Ski Center.
