St. Christoph am Arlberg

St. Christoph is a little winter sports paradise at the Arlberg pass.

St. Christoph am Arlberg, known as one of the highest located ski resorts of Austria and the Eastern Alps, belongs to the municipality of St. Anton am Arlberg. This settlement located at almost 1,800 m asl today mainly consists of hotels and accommodation.

Primarily this village has become famous for its hospice established in the 14th century as well as for the National Ski Academy. The former was constructed by Heinrich Findelkind from Kempten im Allgäu in Germany as protection for travellers from bad weather situations. In order to raise money for that, Heinrich Findelkind in 1386 AD founded the congregation St. Christoph. By the way: St. Christoph am Arlberg has also got an important role to play in alpine skiing, as there is a ski academy conducted by the Austrian Skiing Federation (ÖSV). Today sports students as well as certified ski instructors are trained in this facility, as in former times this ski academy was also an important component in the developing of alpine skiing…

As we mentioned above, St. Christoph, accessible via the Arlberg highway, is a popular winter sports resort. As in 1901 the Arlberg ski club was founded, three years later the first competition took place in the local skiing area. Today the Arlberg skiing area offers 91 modern lift facilities and 278 km of well- groomed ski slopes. Additionally there is the only winter fixed rope route of Tyrol, which is 850 m long and offers securing ropes. Once reached the top of the Vordere Rendelspitze mountain (2,816 m) you can admire the entire Verwall mountain chain as well as the Lechtal Alps. A wonderful experience!
