Pettneu am Arlberg Winter 2011

Pettneu am Arlberg

Pettneu am Arlberg, the neighbouring village of St. Anton am Arlberg, is located at the foot of the Hoher Riffler mountain.

Altitude: 1,228 m asl

Pettneu am Arlberg is located between Landeck and the Arlberg area in the romantic Stanzertal valley. Together with the chief city of Pettneu, the locality of Schnann and several hamlets form the municipal area. The name of the village, mentioned for the first time in the 13th century as “Pudnew”, probably means “new bridge”.

The Lechtal Alps and the Verwall mountain range offer some 400 km of hiking trails, completed by several mountain bike routes. Equally popular is mountaineering on the local mountain, which is the 3,231 m high Hoher Riffler, from the summit of which you can enjoy a magnificient panoramic view on the Allgäu in Germany and the Swiss East Alps. Also recommendable is the Schnanner gorge in the homonymous locality, which recently has been made accessible. The roaring wild river and waterfalls make you feel the elemental force of water, an impressive experience! And there is also a climbing rock in this gorge, offering 42 routes. However, relaxation at Pettneu starts right at the doorstep, as in the village there is the wellness park Arlberg-Stanzertal, offering saunas, solarium and a huge spa area, a great place for relaxation…

In winter Pettneu am Arlberg offers a skiing area with 15 km of ski runs as well as four lift facilities, accessible via the Pettneu funicular. This small but mighty skiing area is also very popular with families, as there is an area for children with a fairytale meadow and children’s playground. Furthermore there are a toboggan run as well as a 40 km long cross-country ski trail in the surroundings of the village. In the surroundings there is also the Arlberg skiing arena, called Ski Arlberg, offering 91 lift facilities as well as 278 km of ski runs. A free shuttle service takes you there. And finally there is also something for those who love culture: in 2005 in the cellar of the Widum (parish estate) an art gallery has been established, which is venue for lectures and exhibitions of national and international artists.

Our recommendation: in the Stanzertal valley you become acquainted with an ancient handicraft, which is the forging of cow bells, what a rarity!
