Stans

Stans is a comfortable holiday resort at the foot of the Karwendel mountain chain.

Here at Stans, there is much to see: the Sacred Heart church has been constructed in Roman-Catholic style between 1884 and 1896, reference for the altar of this church was the altar of the Brussels church. The Laurentius church, however, was built at 1510 in Roman style and has once been a popular pilgrimage site. S. Laurentius is also depicted on the emblem of Stans - the grid illustrated on the left side of the emblem are his hallmarks.

On the right of the emblem, there are three golden ears depicted on blue ground, reminding on the donator of the Georgenberg convent, who had these ears on his emblem. In fact this convent, offering meditation weeks with hiking, leisure time bible studies, retreats and night-time pilgrimage, is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites of Tyrol. It is accessible via the Wolfsklamm gorge, which represents a real natural spectacle with its couloir, steps and stairs. By the way, the bridge “Hohe Brücke”, dating back to the 16th century, is one of the architectonic masterpieces of Tyrol. And also the popular Tratzberg Castle between Jenbach and Schwaz is easily reachable from Stans.

In summer the “Way of St. James” attracts a large number of visitors, parts of this famous trail snake extend from Jenbach via Stans (Georgenberg convent) to Vomp (Fiecht convent) and via Terfens to the Umlberg (pilgrimage chruch Maria Larch). In winter Stans stands for winter sports, which starts in the heart of the village in the little ski oasis. Beside there are the close skiing areas at the Kellerjoch and Weerberg. Likewise popular are also sledging in torchlight and cross-country skiing along a 10 km long trail in the environs of Stans. Moreover there is a children’s entertainment programme in order to enable parents to fully enjoy and relax in their holidays. “Karwendolin”, the mascot, provides fun and action for kids (aged 3 up).
