Zammer Lochputz 2011

Zammer Lochputz

The so-called Zamer Lochputz in the Oberinntal valley is known as the “mystic canyon of Tyrol”.

For centuries the power of water has formed a gorge in Zams, which is today called the Zammer Lochputz. Once upon a time horse-drawn carriages used to take visitors to the entrance of the gorge. However, in order to experience it at first hand, people needed ropes and much courage. Today, however, everyone can easily walk the water adventure trail, starting at the power plant of Zams, one of the oldest power plants of Tyrol. This trail illustrates how the wild waters of the Lötzbach river, in spoken language also called “Lochbach”, are economically used.

The trail runs past a pending bridge and an abandoned smithy, which is also subject of a legend. Once upon a time a widowed blacksmith used to live in this place. A very beautiful nymph moved also to this place. When the shepherd of the Lochalm pasture was able to solve several serious problems, he deserved her hand in marriage. For this reason the blacksmith manipulated the pending bridge and the shepherd deceased in the gorge. A bullhead, known as “Zammer Lochputz”, as well as a beautiful head of a girl, still today can be seen in the gorge, reminding on the shepherd and the nymph and their unfulfilled love. This is also where the Lötzer waterfall cascades into the depth with an amount of water of up to 2,000 l per second. Impressive! However, the legend is also narrated in a multimedia show in the old tower (Römerturm).

The Zammer Lochputz is open daily from early summer to late autumn. A particular highlight: nighttime walks across the illuminated gorge in high summer! Also in winter guided walks are offered across the gorge, showing you the gorge in another, totally different season. At the entrance of the gorge, which is subject to a little fee, you get also helmets, which are obligatory.
